"In festive seasons, being without the family is complicated and participating in this get-together with you is having a different Christmas", reports the DMS inmate at the workshop "Waiting for Christmas" promoted by the Center for Research in Health Interfaces (NUPEIS) of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, held on December 15, at Conjunto Prisional Feminine in Lemos de Brito.

The project has been in existence for two years and began with the State University of Bahia (UNEB), coordinated by the professor of the Nursing course at Bahiana and from UNEB, Tânia Bispo. The initial objective was to work on the issue of pregnant women residing in the prison, but due to the increased demand of women who wanted to join the project, it was extended to all female inmates in the complex.

With specific themes, the Bahiana has been developing these activities on a monthly basis at Lemos de Brito. The closing program this year was about Christmas and had a partnership with the Angels of Nursing Program, which promoted a dynamic presentation with the inmates, recreational activities, an exhibition of photo posters of all the activities carried out during the year and a Christmas snack .

“We brought a Christmas get-together for the inmates with music, a tree with photos, all of this in order to bring the Christmas spirit inside the prison complex”, reports Prof. Tânia.

The 6th semester nursing student, Mirele Lemos, who is part of the Angels of Nursing Program, reports that it was a very human experience and says that the visits provide students with a great life lesson, because whenever they perform an activity, they are treated with a lot of respect and affection.
