On September 30, the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública will hold one more edition of the Progress Test, simultaneously in the Academic Units Brotas and Cabula from 14 pm to 18 pm (rooms will be open from 13 pm). This time, the novelty is that the test will be national, which gives greater relevance and visibility.

All students of the Medicine course (1st to 12th semester) are already automatically enrolled and will be able to take the assessment, and they will also receive a bonus in grades as recognition of performance, according to criteria established by the Assessment Manual of Bahiana.

According to the coordinator of the Medicine course, Prof. Dr. Eliana de Paula, "the Progress Test is important for all students, especially those who are in the internship, as it helps in the selection process for Medical Residency".

HISTORY
The Progress Test was introduced in medical courses in the 1970s by the Kansas City Medical School from the University of Missouri (USA) and then University of Limburg, today Maastricht University (Netherlands). Since then, several other Schools of Medicine have started to use this method of assessment in isolation or in a collaborative association.

WHAT IS THE PROGRESS TEST?
The Progress Test is a longitudinal assessment of students' cognitive development applied during the undergraduate course. In this assessment, psychomotor skills and attitudes are not verified, which are two other dimensions of the teaching-learning process in medical education.

Its basic objective is to assess the cognitive performance of students during the course, as well as aspects of the undergraduate course itself.

WHO CAN TAKE THE PROGRESS TEST?
As of 2013.2, the Progress Test began to be applied annually to all students regularly enrolled in the undergraduate course in Medicine, including from 1st semester freshmen to 12th semester inmates. All students are automatically pre-enrolled by the academic secretariats.

HOW IS THE PROGRESS TEST COMPOSED?
It is a single written assessment, consisting of 100 questions, with comprehensive content taught by all curricular components of the undergraduate course in Medicine. The questions are contextualized with clinical cases.

WHAT ARE THE RESULTS OF THE PROGRESS TEST FOR?
The analysis of the results of the Progress Test allows an assessment to be made, together with other assessment tools, of the relationship between syllabus content and the curricular structure of the undergraduate medical course and also the degree of development of students throughout the course.

WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRESS TEST?
There are several reasons to participate, among them, the following can be highlighted:

- The sequential realization of the Progress Test allows the student to verify the evolution of their cognitive performance in the different areas and phases of the course;

- It is a so-called formative assessment that enables the identification of potential difficulties and encourages the search for their correction.

- The analysis of the results of the Progress Test allows decisions to be taken and actions taken in the search for continuous improvement, both at the individual student level and at the undergraduate level, in a more global way.

- Another advantage of taking the Progress Test is represented by the training opportunity, with a view to the future realization of selection processes in which students will participate, such as the selection processes for Medical Residency programs.

Additionally, the processing and analysis of the results obtained will allow the construction of cognitive performance curves that will help to identify the weaknesses and strengths of students in different areas of knowledge and in different phases of the course. This information, in addition to others coming from various evaluation tools, will allow, as a whole, the triggering of actions with the objective of improving the curriculum, the curriculum, the teaching-learning strategies and the pedagogical methods adopted.

In addition, major teaching hospitals in the country have considered participation in Progress Tests as part of activities that receive scores in the analysis of the curriculum vitae of candidates for admission to Medical Residency programs.

HOW WILL THE PROGRESS TEST RESULTS BE DISCLOSED?
Each individual student may, by entering a personal password, have access to the result of their Progress Test and the evolution of their results (progress) over the next few years. Your individual results will not be made public.
