"Periferia, territory of the angels" is the title of the show which premiered on August 22, at the theater of the Association of Parish Communities of Mata Escura and Calabetão (Acopamec), in the Mata Escura neighborhood. The play is guided by the work “Romeu e Julieta”, by William Shakespeare, with a script adapted to the reality of the peripheries of Brazil.

The assembly is a realization of the extension program BAHIANESCER, linked to the Nursing course at Bahiana which aims to strengthen comprehensive care for adolescent health, as well as enhance the actions developed by the young members of the Adolescer com Arte group, who work with health promotion through artistic activities. The actions also have a partnership with the Mata Escura Basic Health Unit (UBS).

“We think of this project as a strategy to bring this public closer and better to health services. Based on this proposal, we established the extension program BAHIANESCER, in which we integrate academia and the community, through weekly meetings with adolescents, to discuss various topics related to health, society and contemporaneity", explains Professor of Nursing gives Bahiana, Rosicleide A. Freitas Machado, who coordinates the extension project.

“Being part of such an innovative project as BAHIANESCER is an honor. The experiences exchanged with teenagers from the Mata Escura community enrich me not only as a professional, but mainly as a human being. These are teenagers who fight daily for a country and a better life and who seek their rights and show that there are also people on the periphery who want to have a voice in society”, reports Maria Aline Silva Alves, 2nd semester student of Nursing at Bahiana.

The creator of the Adolescer com Arte Project, Lenilson Bento, reports that the construction process of the pieces always has a direct focus on the health of the adolescent, young and adult population, working on themes identified as important to be addressed in their context.

“Bahiana, in this year of 2015, it consolidated the partnership with Adolescer and has been responsible for producing our meetings, always creatively approaching the themes suggested by our young people, sharing and building all the ideas that will be included in the plays", he says Lenilson.

"From this junction, Bahiana and Adolescer, the BAHIANESCER emerged, an initiative of the college and a need of the group. This action has been strengthening every day the entire process of building healthy ideas and practices in the lives of each member of the group and, also, in the final result”, he concludes.
