The program explained the topic HTLV-1 and related viruses and was attended by Prof. Dr. Bernardo Galvão Castro, coordinator of the HTLV Integrative and Multidisciplinary Center at Bahiana, from the teachers of Bahiana  David Nunes, Juarez Dias, Ney Boa-Sorte, Maria Fernanda Grassi and Thessika Araújo, from the HTLV Center collaborators, Noilson Lázaro and Viviana Olavarria Gallazzi, from the postgraduate students of the Medicine and Human Health course, Glauco Moniz de Aragão Dória and Isabelle Rocha Santos, in addition to the medical student, Izabel Bou Teixeira.

HTLV-1 currently infects approximately 20 million individuals worldwide and is responsible for different pathologies, including leukemia T-cell age and HTLV-1 associated myelopathy. Studies on newly discovered human retroviruses as well as recent data on virus-host interactions were presented at the congress with the aim of bringing together the majority of researchers in the field, providing an overview of current biomedical investigation, epidemiology and clinical research.

During the event, the conference “Evidence of a predominance of HTLV-1 sexual transmission in Salvador” was presented by professors Eduardo Galvão, David Nunes, Ney Boa-Sorte, Maria Fernanda Rios Grassi, Kleber Pimentel, Maria Gloria Teixeira, Mauricio L. Barreto and Inês Dourado. Lectures were also presented on topics such as atherosclerosis, risk factors for cardiovascular disease and lymphotropic virus for human T-cell infection 1 (HTLV - 1), incidence of tropical spastic parapesia (TSP) / HTLV-1 / myelopathy associated with (TSP / HAM) in patients followed at a referral center in Salvador, tuberculosis (TB) as an incidence in individuals infected with human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV- 1) and evaluation of the functional capacity and flexibility of patients infected with HTLV - 1 .

The coordinator of the HTLV Integrative and Multidisciplinary Center at Bahiana, Prof. Dr. Bernardo Galvão-Castro was honored with the Quality Award at the International Conference. "This achievement is very grand for the institution, both for researchers, professors and students and for professionals working in the health area, as it highlights the progress of these professionals in the contribution and understanding of HTLV-1, both in the epidemiological part and in the evolution of the pathology”, he declared.
