A Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, in partnership with the Association Bahiana dos Amigos do MPS (ABAMPS), promotes, on May 16, from 07:30 am to 12:3.386 pm, the commemoration of the MPS International Awareness Day, at the Cabula Academic Unit, at Rua Av. Silveira Martins, nº XNUMX.

The program aims to bring together academics, teachers, employees and the community in general to disseminate Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS). Visitors can also contribute with donations of non-perishable food and personal hygiene and cleaning materials for people with the disease treated by ABAMPS.

MPS
A Mucopolysaccharidosis ou MPS is a subgroup of lysosomal storage diseases (DDL) that belong to the largest group of genetic disorders of metabolism, caused by the absence of enzymes.

It is caused by a defect in the gene that produces an enzyme called alpha-L-iduronidase. Because of this deficiency, cells produce the enzyme in low amounts or cannot produce it.

According to the Ministry of Health, in Brazil, there are about 600 cases of Mucopolysaccharidosis and, according to the São Paulo Association of Families and Friends of Patients with Mucopolysaccharidosis, in the state of São Paulo, it is estimated that there are 150 confirmed cases. According to records in the associations for patients with Mucopolysaccharidosis, Pernambuco is the 2nd state that registers the most cases of mucopolysaccharidosis.

ABAMPS - Association Bahiana of the Friends of the MPS
Created in 2007, the association was developed due to the lack of structure of Bahian patients to gain access to treatment for MPS.

It is an association that integrates MPS patients and their families in the State of Bahia, guaranteeing access to healthcare and fighting for social inclusion.
