On April 10th, the VIII Seminar on Medical Internship: residency, market and perspectives was held at the Cabula Academic Unit of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública.

The event brought together students who are attending the 11th and 12th semesters of Medicine, professors and renowned guests in the health area to discuss the perspectives of medical work, issues related to medical residency and controversial issues within the category, such as filling out a declaration of death, granting a medical certificate and ethical issues in medicine.

To integrate the program, the professor of clinical medicine and psychodynamics, Dr. Luiz Queiroz, the National Commissioner for Medical Residency, Prof. Francisco Arsego, the president of the Regional Council of Medicine (Cremeb), Dr. Abelardo Garcia de Menezes, the counselor of Cremeb, Dr. Me. Madalena Santana, the lawyer of Cremeb, Cássia Barreto and the director of the Hospital do Subúrbio, Dr. Jorge Motta.

The coordinator of the Medicine course at Bahiana, Prof. Eliana de Paula, reports that the seminar caused a great mobilization among the students, who were released from the internships, precisely to participate in the event. It shows that, with the changes in the job market and in the country, the meeting is very important for the preparation of students.

“It's a very difficult time in the student's life, so he has to have lights, paths, more experienced people to guide, support and reassure these graduates”, concludes the coordinator.

Professor Luiz Queiroz made an opening on “Being a doctor” and explained a little about the contrast between the market, modern society, competitiveness and what this influences in the course's students.

"I came to remind students that to be a doctor requires a lot of study, at what cost the phrase 'to be a doctor', when we put the verb 'to be', we call the person to wholeness, no one goes to the verb to be, just in the head or only half of it will always require competence, effectiveness, efficiency, nobody goes for the verb to be heartless, the verb to be presupposes existence, wholeness”, explains the professor.

The schedule also discussed issues related to medical residency and its changes. The National Commissioner for Medical Residency, Professor Francisco Arsego, highlighted important points on the subject. “It's complicated to say, we are going through a period of major changes in residency due to the “Mais Médicos” law, which is a broad law that has influence both on undergraduate and graduate levels. The biggest influence on residency is that the law determines several things, for example, the issue of universalization of residence vacancies in 2018. Nowadays, not every graduate has guaranteed resident vacancies and to achieve this universalization, we have to work since now.”, reports Arsego.

The event was of great importance to clarify students' doubts, answered by the president of Cremeb, Dr. Abelardo Garcia, and by professor Francisco Arsego, from the National Residency Commission.

Student Ingrid Barboza, 22, reports that the idea of the seminar is extremely important to students. “The job market is going through many changes and for people who are going to graduate now, it is very interesting to have this space to debate, clarify doubts about the career we are going to follow. It is a very opportune moment, the speakers have a great knowledge of the facts. My class went through a whirlwind of changes, the expectation when we started the course was one and today the market is different, the proposals for medical residency are different, so there is a little uncertainty about what we will find, but I hope we can do it medicine with quality, as we have the benefit of studying at a college that values and values the quality of teaching”, he concludes.
