On March 30, at the Academic Unit Brotas da Bahiana, there was a lecture on racial relations in the training of health professionals, given by psychologist and professor Alessandro de Oliveira Santos, from the Department of Social and Work Psychology of the Institute of Psychology at USP.

The event provided an interdisciplinary discussion on social ethnic relations and humanity, involving students and the school's faculty.

“The idea is to start a discussion on an extremely relevant and transversal topic in the training of health professionals. This professional needs to have a critical, humanistic view and be clear about the concepts of prejudice, equality and discrimination. We must know how we stand in front of all this”, explains Sylvia Barreto, coordinator of the Psychology course at Bahiana.

Race relations are present in the social life of individuals, groups and social classes and, to debate these issues, the Bahiana brought together teachers and students with the aim of promoting an interactive debate. Student Aline Souza, 5th semester student of Psychology at Bahiana, reports that the topic is very interesting and that he has recently started to study the issue of race relations. “I'm part of the group promoted by professor Marilda Castelar and I had already read a historical text by the psychologist Alessandro that dealt precisely with the historical context of racial relations”, summarizes the student.

The Psychology professor at Bahiana, Marilda Castelar, reports that the lecture is an awareness of the teachers to include, in their pedagogical projects and curriculum content, the theme of racial relations.

“It is important that we manage to change our pedagogical projects so that we can talk about racial issues”, he concludes.
