Last Saturday, 7, the Parque de Pituaçu was the scene of an action to promote intimate health with the objective of informing the population about the functions and muscular dysfunctions of the pelvic floor.

The event was promoted by Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, through the Pelvic Floor Care Center (CAAP) and in partnership with the Municipal Health Secretary with the aim of covering a serious issue that not only affects women, but also the elderly and men.

Dr. Patrícia Lordelo, physiotherapist and professor at Bahiana explains that the action encompasses all pelvic floor dysfunctions, including urinary incontinence, which can be both urgent and exertion. The initiative also seeks to guide participants about the sexual function. “To facilitate penetration and orgasm, the muscles need to be working in sync. These disorders also cause constipation, in which the coordination of relaxation and the contraction of muscles that are guided in the male response is extremely important, as, after prostate surgery, men need to be aware of the functioning of these muscles, thus preventing urinary loss”.

Maria do Patrocínio, 24, a student in the civil fireman's course, says that it's good to be aware of the control of muscles and urinary incontinence. “In relation to the perineum, there are people who have childbirth and with complications that can cause the muscle to relax, thus causing urinary incontinence. Most people who have this disorder don't know where the problem is and, therefore, I thought this action was an excellent initiative, especially for women who are unaware of this subject”, she explains.

Letícia Vilas Boas, 19, a medical student at UFBA, says she was aware of pelvic floor disorders in college and that the initiative is important to inform the population. “Those who are not from the area are not aware of the problem, especially women who have all those taboos and, therefore, are unaware of the region of the perineum and pelvic floor”, she reports.

Pelvic floor dysfunction is a wide range of problems that arise when the musculature in this area does not function properly. As the Ministry of Health, 30% of women suffer from this problem and are unaware of the symptoms and 70% of the adult population, in the elderly, have problems in this region.
