LABESB on balance

Liga carried out more than 18 actions to promote oral health.

During 2014, the Bahia Academic League of Oral Health Education (LABESB) visited churches, associations, joint efforts, schools, day care centers, hospitals, companies and charitable events, with the objective of promoting oral health, taking information about self-care , importance of oral hygiene and prevention of oral and systemic diseases.

Coordinated by Professor Dr. Antonio Pitta Correa and composed of 21 undergraduate students from the 5th to the 10th semester of the Dentistry course at Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, LABESB participated in 18 social actions, an extension activity and two trips, last year alone. In the program, around 1.600 children were presented with Colgate oral hygiene kits.

Among LABESB's actions, there were visits by Mobile Dental Assistance, also known as Odontomóvel, to three cities in Bahia. At the time, dental care was performed, such as restorations with composite resin, amalgam, glass ionomer cement, supragingival scraping and sealants.

In partnership with the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), LABESB was also part of the project “The promotion of health and the guarantee of the right to health in an indigenous community: art, culture, intersectoral planning and popular education, in a Kiriri village from Bahia." This activity was carried out in the municipality of Banzaê-Ba and educational actions in oral health were promoted, together with the UFBA's PET Dentistry, through plays, recreational activities, topical application of fluoride, among others, totaling 93 procedures performed.

In the week of October 6th to 10th, the League promoted outreach activities with 36 graduates in dentistry, at Fundação Instituto São Geraldo, located in the neighborhood of Sete de Abril, in the city of Salvador and, among the actions, promotion and promotion were carried out. oral health prevention, dental care, assisting students from the Afrânio Peixoto Municipal School and the local population, totaling 68 visits at the Odontomóvel and 95 units restored using the ART technique.

From November 29th to December 6th, with the support of the local city hall, LABESB visited the city of Conceição do Almeida, a municipality located 160 km from Salvador. At the time, dental care was provided to 461 students from five schools and one municipal day care center, in addition to adult patients from the Bárbara Ferreira de Jesus Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS) and 43 students who were treated at the Odontomóvel, with the restoration of 198 units by the ART technique.

Due to so many actions, extension and oral promotion activities developed by LABESB, the year 2014 was marked by great improvements and benefits in all the posts the League visited, thus noting the importance of continuing serious and important work for health in general. Even with the farewell of 10 of the 21 members of the League, due to the conclusion of the graduation period, LABESB warns undergraduates from the 5th to 8th semester of Dentistry that registration will be open for the 2015.1 selection process, to those interested in join the League.
