The Pelvic Floor Care Group, led by Prof. Dr. Patrícia Lordêlo, has just achieved an important achievement for the development of health studies. With the support of research groups led by Dr. Halina Feitosa, Dr. Kátia Sá, Prof. Joseane Dantas (SENAI CIMATEC) and Prof. Cibele Tozeti (Federal University of Recôncavo), in addition to professors Ana Marice Ladeia and Luis Cláudio Costa, Prof. Patrícia Lordêlo's project was included in the notice of the Support Program for Emerging Groups (Pronem), which aims to finance the execution of projects for emerging groups and allow the consolidation of priority research lines, inducing training of new centers of excellence. Pronem is run in partnership with CNPq.

According to Patrícia Lordêlo, the birth of the research group began with the work that has been developed in the Pelvic Floor Care Center (CAAP), whose activities are aimed at the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pelvic kinetic-functional dysfunctions (urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, urinary retention, constipation, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction) including in the pregnancy-puerperal cycle. It was from the work developed at the CAAP that the various research groups got together "and that was how we managed to structure ourselves for the formation of this nucleus that gave foundation to the project we submitted to PRONEM", explains Lordêlo.

The main objective of the study is to test the effectiveness of a non-ablative radiofrequency technique, developed by Prof. Patrícia Lordêlo and her group, in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. "For this, we are going to develop a prototype of a head that is specific for this (radio frequency) equipment. We are also going to develop one which will associate the electromyography part, which is the electrical muscle activity of the pelvic floor, in a virtual environment. We are going to verify how much this urinary incontinence interferes with the quality of life of women and if the radiofrequency treatment - this new technique in a virtual environment - has any influence on the patient's quality of life and sexual function." She also draws attention to the issue. the fact that, depending on the result of the research, it will be possible to generate a patent registration for both the new device developed and the new .

With the resources of Pronem, it will be possible to acquire state-of-the-art equipment that will make it possible to assess, with maximum precision, the sexual function, the patient's quality of life and to associate it with changes in both vitamin D and postural and hyperlipidic levels, verifying the influence of the increase of fat in certain places of the body, mainly the abdomen etc. "So, basically, we're developing innovative techniques for treating women with stress urinary incontinence."

According to Patrícia, institutional support and support were also definitive for the success of the project at Pronem. "THE Bahiana it has a fundamental role in this achievement, as it gave us all the structure for us to be able to set up this project. If we observe, our project was the only one coming from a private institution. This shows the weight that the Bahiana has, mainly because he believes in and encourages research."

The professor also highlights the importance of association with partner research groups. "I attribute this recognition, this achievement, to the union of people working towards knowledge and towards the improvement of care for the population".

The Pelvic Floor Care Center originated from the Study Group on Voiding Disorders and Female Genitalia and it is a multidisciplinary team whose objective is the teaching-assistance activity linked to scientific research on the theme that calls it. Its activities are focused on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pelvic kinetic-functional dysfunctions (urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, urinary retention, constipation, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction) including in the pregnancy-puerperal cycle.

The service is provided on Wednesdays, from 13 pm, at the Advanced Physiotherapy Clinic (CAFIS) of the Teaching-Assistance Outpatient Clinic of the Bahiana (ADAB), at the Academic Unit Brotas. At the meetings, educational lectures are held, in addition to screening and treatment. Members of the Pelvic Floor Care Group, made up of undergraduate and graduate students from the Bahiana, professors from partnership entities, led by the researcher Prof. Dr. Patrícia Lordêlo.
