Bahiana supports Pacemaker's Day activities

Programming takes place on the 23rd, at the Academic Unit Brotas.

A Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública will host a series of attractions in celebration of Pacemaker Carrier Day, on September 23rd. The activities will take place in the Academic Unit Brotas from 9 am to 12 pm. The event is an initiative of the Department of Artificial Cardiac Stimulation (DECA) of the Brazilian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery (SBCCV), with the support of Bahiana.

The objective is to alert public opinion about the need to improve the access of patients who need these devices to medical professionals, especially in the Unified Health System, since, currently, many people die in the waiting list for an implant. 

The program will be open to the public and will feature the distribution of educational material and explanations from doctors to answer visitors' questions; exposure of pacemaker, cardiodefibrillator and resynchronizer - so that people learn to differentiate each one of them -, assistance to measure cholesterol and glycemic index.


About pacemaker implant
According to data from the worldwide sense of pacemakers and defibrillators, Brazil loses in these procedures to neighboring countries such as Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. Here, 190 pacemakers are installed per million inhabitants, while in Chile there are 216, in Argentina 382, ​​in Uruguay 578 and, in Puerto Rico, 606 pacemakers per million inhabitants. In developed countries, these numbers are even more expressive: 746 in Spain, 762 in Portugal and 767 pacemakers per million inhabitants in the United States. In France there are 1.019, in Italy 1.048 and in Germany, 1.267.
