National Epilepsy Day

Many people are still prejudiced against people who have epilepsy, but if properly treated, the patient can have a normal life.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders. It affects approximately 1% of the general population. Therefore, in Salvador, it is estimated that there are about 30 thousand people with epilepsy. It is a chronic disease that is highly stigmatized and, therefore, the patient suffers a lot of prejudice.

But fortunately there is treatment that is very effective. About 70 to 80% of affected individuals, with proper treatment, are able to stay free of crises.

Graduated in Medicine by Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública (Bahiana), did a Medical Residency in Neurology and Specialization in Epilepsy at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of USP. He is currently a professor of Physiology at Bahiana, Coordinator of the Epilepsy Service and neurologist at the HTLV Center of the Teaching Assistance Clinic of Bahiana (ADAB). He is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology and is currently researching cognitive functions in patients with epilepsy.
