III Biomedicine Symposium

Share

Mini-courses, debates, lectures and round tables were the activities that mobilized the Biomedicine course from October 14th to 18th, during the III Biomedicine Symposium of Bahiana, which took place at the Cabula Academic Unit. Cytogenetics, Molecular Biology, Forensic Radiology, Acupuncture and Clinical Analysis were some of the topics covered at the event.

According to the course coordinator, Prof. Dr. Geraldo Argolo, "the participation of graduates was fundamental for the exchange of experience, serving as a bridge between academia and the reality of the professional market. After the report of these professionals, full of passion for what they do and successful, thanks to his competent and committed training, we could notice the reverberation in the students".

Prof. Geraldo also reinforces the importance of the exchange of learning between students and former students of Biomedicine as an outstanding feature of the symposium. "Young people arrive very early and immature for academic life and a large part have difficulty in taking on the resulting responsibilities. Participating in these events provides an opportunity to experience, with professionals who were once in their place, their choices, their duties, rights and likely outcomes for their professional destinies".

For teacher Mara Dias, who coordinated it, "the event contributed to the formation of students as they have the opportunity to deepen their interests through short courses, which took place throughout the week in various areas."

Another point highlighted by the professor was the innovative aspect of the event in approaching a new area of Biomedicine. “We were pioneers in bringing a biomedical doctor to talk about his new area of expertise: aesthetics. I say new area because the legislation allowed the entry of biomedical in this area, since 2010 and, in Bahia, we do not have any professional with this qualification”.

The symposium was also an opportunity for undergraduate students to present scientific papers that competed for the Prof. Dr. Geraldo Leite. Six scientific initiation students from Biomedicine and Medicine courses, who develop work in the Bahiana and at FFIOCRUZ, they presented their work. Due to the excellent quality of the studies presented, the panel, consisting of four researchers, had difficulties in choosing. Biomedicine academic Bahiana, Marielle Guimarães, was the winner with the presentation of the theme called FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF MUTATIONS IN THE PROMOTER REGION AND HTLV-1 SURFACE GLYCOPROTEIN, guided by researchers Luiz Carlos Alcântara and Fernanda Khoury, from FIOCRUZ. The student will have a period of up to 12 months to request the aid of up to R$400,00 to pay for the registration of her work in a scientific event.
