II Symposium on Biomedicine of Bahiana receives students from other municipalities

Academics from Cruz das Almas, Alagoinhas, Ibotirama, Feira de Santana join students from Bahiana and participate in scientific programming.

With a rich scientific program, the II Symposium on Biomedicine of Bahiana which took place from October 22nd to 27th, at the Cabula Academic Unit, attracted approximately 160 people. Academics of the course, students from other institutions in Salvador and other municipalities such as Cruz das Almas, Alagoinhas, Ibotirama, Feira de Santana and students from secondary schools, as well as teachers and researchers actively participated in the short courses, lectures, roundtables and presentation of works offered by the event.

The opening was highlighted by the presence of Dr. Luis de França, president of the Council of Biomedicine and had the participation of the coordinator of the Biomedicine course at Bahiana, Prof. Geraldo Argolo and the coordinator of the Postgraduate, Research and Extension program at Bahiana, Dr. Kátia Sá.

The program included the presentation of lectures “Forensic Biotechnology”, presented by Dr. Torricele Thé from the Technical Police Department of Bahia; “Assisted Reproduction”, given by doctors Genevieve Coelho, Gérsia Viana and Yasmin Chung, who presented a review on the subject and the opportunities for biomedical professionals and “Main Updates on Imagenology”, with the participation of biomedical doctors Edson Oliveira and Thomas Bastos .

This year, for the first time, the best scientific work of the symposium was recognized with the granting of the Professor Geraldo Leite Award. Twelve papers by undergraduate students of Biomedicine courses competed.

The award was offered to honor Professor Dr. Geraldo Leite for his important contribution to the Biomedicine course, especially during the period of its creation.

The winner of the first place was the student Débora Maia Teles Silveira, Biomedicine academic at the University of Tiradentes (UNIT – SE), with the work “Functional recovery after spinal cord injury using physical activity and treatment with red propolis extract from Sergipe”. She received, as an award, financial aid for registering her work in other scientific events, in the amount of up to R$400,00.

The second place went to the work “Assessment of the CAST gene polymorphism in Santa Inês sheep in the state of Bahia”, authored by a student of the Biomedicine course at Bahiana, Mariana Silva. She received as a prize the book “Molecular Biology and Evolution”, offered in person by its author, professor Flora Fernandes.
