Which society project are you helping to build? With this question, the XXIII Scientific and Cultural Exhibition of Bahiana delved deeper into the theme “Struggles, social justice and youth”, on the 20th and 21st of October. Held at the Cabula Campus, the event marked the return of MCC's in-person activities after the pandemic, proposing the construction of a community guided by social and environmental justice.

The Exhibition, which was created to present to freshmen “what the Bahiana has”, the 23rd edition has arrived, valuing science, research and extension in their social dimensions. The MCC program included the XIII Researchers Forum and the X Extension Exhibition. During the opening ceremony, rector Maria Luisa Carvalho Soliani stated that scientific work is also political, citing the conflict in the Gaza Strip and violence and inequalities in Brazil. “We need science to build a world that will only make sense if it is fair for everyone. It is up to the youth to rebel and question real democracy”, provoked the dean.

By bringing together such a diverse audience, the Exhibition reaffirmed that society cannot be an individual project, highlighted the pro-rector of Extension, professor Carolina Pedrosa, who shared the leadership of the XXIII MCC with the PIS coordinator, professor Lavínia Boaventura. The opening panel was also made up of the dean of Research, Innovation and Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Studies, professor Atson Fernandes. “After the isolation of the pandemic, we wanted to awaken this commitment in students, so that they can be indignant and face the ills of the society we live in”, said Professor Carolina. The opening event had a cultural presentation by the band Anarkas and the round table “Reflections on social justice and society”, with the coordinator of the MST Bahia Youth Collective, Dany Carvalho, and the lawyer and activist of the Uneafro Black Movement, Beatriz Lorenzo.
