A mix of knowledge, relaxation and Bahian food. So was the XXI Science with Acarajé, which took place last Thursday, May 9, at Campus Cabula da Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública. Held by students of the Tutorial Biomedicine Education Program (PET Biomedicina), the meeting had as its theme "Human microbiome: key to the health of the body and mind", which was presented by the professor at Bahiana Dr. Thessika Araújo.

Sidney Carlos de Jesus Santana, professor and tutor at PET Biomedicina, explains that the initial idea of Ciência com Acarajé was to be a project aimed at the Biomedicine course. “However, it took on a much greater scope and is now open to all courses in the health area and to the external community. We are very happy, as the entries were sold out quickly and this has already made us think about the next edition, which takes place on September 26th”, declared Sidney. He also emphasizes that the initiative also has a social character: “We asked participants to bring food to be donated to a charity institution”.

Michele Santiago, a 7th semester student of Biomedicine and a member of the event's organizing committee, explains how the topic is chosen. “We students, with the help of our tutor Sidney Santana, choose a guest to speak and make a draw of themes on Instagram to define what will be the topic of the night. It is very gratifying to participate in this event that has become a tradition here at Bahiana".

During the lecture, Professor Dr. Thessika Araújo, who is also a former student of Bahiana, explained how the composition of the microbiome works, which is the set of microorganisms that are part of the ecosystem, what is its relationship with various diseases, with stress and human behavior.

The speaker also spoke about the importance of discussing this theme. “Studies and, consequently, scientific knowledge about human interactions related to the diversity of microorganisms that make up the human microbiota has developed in recent years in different areas of science. This diversity in the composition of the human microbiota exerts important and fundamental functions for health, therefore, they become relevant in the formation of a biomedic”.

Several students attended the event. Filipe Oscar, a 3rd semester student of Biomedicine, shares his learning. “I found it very interesting. The presentation was great. Several articles talk about the issue of microbiota, and this is a very relevant subject nowadays, mainly because it brings interesting perspectives of possibilities of disease treatments”.

After the end of the lecture and a round of questions and comments on the theme, the participants of the meeting fraternized tasting the traditional acarajé with soda. The students were moved from the scientific reflection environment and were able to enjoy the rest of the night with delicious food from Bahia.
