On May 11, students and professors from the Biomedicine course were gathered for the 17th edition of Ciência com Acarajé, at the Cabula Academic Unit Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública. The event, produced by the Tutorial Education Program (PET) Biomedicine, also received students from other courses with the aim of instructing them on the use of the neuronavigator for the surgical treatment of intracranial tumors.

On the occasion, a lecture was given by the biomedical specialist in neuronavigation and graduated from Bahiana, Diane Éllen Serra, who explained the use of the neuronavigator and its importance for biomedical professionals.
The biomedical explained that the equipment allows detecting brain tumors and treating them in isolation. Its use is relatively new in Bahia. “There are still few neurosurgeons who operate with this help”, he recalled.

For Serra, it is the university's job to prepare students for the market, hence the importance of presenting the subject, guiding future professional actions. “As the area of biomedicine has great training in imaging, many people will work with this. It is important to know the procedures”.

According to the specialist, for the correct use of the neuronavigator, it is essential that the equipment has the resonance and tomography exams following a specific protocol.

The professor of the Biomedicine course and event coordinator, Sidney Santana, explained the proposal for the 17th edition of Science with Acarajé: “we brought a theme that is well known in Europe and the United States to show students the importance of putting together a team multiprofessional with physicians, biodoctors, nurses and other health professionals”.

For Larissa Brito dos Santos, student of the 3rd semester of the Biomedicine course, the PET event adds knowledge. "I've participated in three consecutive editions and I find the proposal to attract students not only from the Biomedicine course but from other courses focused on subjects that, during our graduation, will be extremely relevant to our professional training" interesting.

Caio Luís Dórea, student of the 3rd semester of the Biomedicine course, said that the topic was very pertinent, as it presented the notion of precision in neuronavigation surgery. “The event is interesting due to the diversity of topics covered and the integration of students from different semesters and courses”.

For Luan dos Santos Araújo PET Biomedicina student, the topic addressed in this edition of Science with Acarajé is the result of innovation in the biomedical area that took place at the end of 2016. “It was enriching to participate in the event and follow this discussion, relevant for us, students and, also, because it is interdisciplinary”.
