Lectures, debates, roundtables, short courses aimed at research and innovations in the biomedical area guided the VI Symposium on Biomedicine, which took place on March 17th and 18th, at the Cabula Academic Unit Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública.

The event was supported by PET Biomedicina, the Academic Directory of Biomedicine (Unibiomed) and the Academic League of Laboratory Management (LAGL).

According to the coordinator of the Biomedicine course, Prof. Dr. Geraldo Argolo, the event is already an established activity at the institution, as it addresses several themes and innovations in the biomedical area, which are important for the professional training of academics.

This year, the demand from the public was great and the short courses had sold out. During the event, at the table entitled "The path of stones", graduates trained by Bahiana, today biomedical practitioners from specific areas, narrated their experiences. “They told about their trajectories, which, I believe, is a differential in the programming”, pointed out Argolo.

For Daniel Marciel, a student of the 8th semester of the Biomedicine course and president of LAGL, the symposium is extremely important for academics, as it provides a differentiated view of the market. “I think about working in the area of clinical analysis and participating in the symposium allows us to clarify our doubts and add knowledge about new techniques and innovations”.

According to former student Messias Santos Moraes, who gave the lecture “The importance of the scientific advisor in clinical automation to support laboratory diagnosis”, sharing the experience with students collaborates with the training of these future biomedical doctors. "I'm a graduate of Bahiana eight years ago. I specialize in bioimaging, clinical analysis, acupuncture and work as a scientific advisor at Siemens Healthineers. With all the advances in the biomedical area, it is important to bring the reality of the job market to students”.

expanding area

Vice-president of the academic directory, Raphaela Lisboa, a student of the 7th semester of the Biomedicine course, says that the activity brings to the academic community a gain in updates in the area of biomedicine.

“Listening to the reports of other professionals who are already in the market is fundamental for our training”, he says. For her, this ends up guiding the work of professionals and “directing the areas in which we intend to pursue a career”.

For João Souza, 4th semester of biomedicine and member of PET, having a symposium like this is a gain for the students, as it is an area in expansion. "New areas and techniques are brought into the activities carried out during the program, making it possible to target those we have more affinity".

The PET Biomedicina tutor and professor of the Biomedicine course, Sidney Santana, reports that it was a pleasure to chair the symposium, an event planned with great care to offer academics ample content about the biomedical job market.

“In this edition, the symposium focused on “Research and innovation”, a widely publicized and important theme, aiming to complement the academic training of the participants”, he summarized.

Exhibition

As an incentive to the artistic part, during the event a photo exhibition entitled “Microscopic Panoramas” was held. The show included the work of biomedical researcher Caíque Almeida Machado Costa, graduated by Bahiana and who, recently, did an exchange program in the United States.

Dr. Geraldo Leite Award

During the symposium, undergraduate students presented the scientific papers that competed for the Prof. Dr. Geraldo Leite. Chosen among the six best works, the winner was the academic of the Biomedicine course at Bahiana, Ângelo Antônio Oliveira Silva, who presented the work entitled “Pharmacological characterization of nine medicinal plants traditionally used in Bahia”.

Guided by Prof. Dr. Mateus Santos Sá, the student's project was a partnership with Bahiana with the Natural Products Laboratory of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) and with the research group of the Health Center in Human and Environmental Studies.

The award corresponds to a financial aid in the amount of up to R$ 400,00 for the registration of the work in other scientific events and that can be requested within 12 months.
