A palavra psicologia tem origem grega: psique (alma) logos (estudo). Mais do que estudar, o psicólogo auxilia o indivíduo a se cuidar. No Brasil, no dia 27 de agosto de 1964, foi regulamentada a profissão e, portanto, nessa data é celebrado o Dia do Psicólogo.

According to studies, the history of psychology begins with philosophers, who were the first to care about emotional and psychological issues. Today, the psychologist's work is more connected to the study of the phenomena of the mind and the behavior of the man, in order to help him to find the way out of the problems that afflict his emotions.

Estamos ouvindo muito falar em Bullying, assédio moral, crimes e corrupção. Por isso, é muito mais fácil entramos em desequilíbrio emocional, daí a figura do psicólogo tornar-se cada vez mais necessária no mundo contemporâneo. Antes restrito aos consultórios, hoje o psicólogo está presente em diversos ambientes da sociedade, desde hospitais até empresas, escolas, presídios, organizações não-governamentais, entre outros. Estruturalismo, funcionalismo, behaviorismo, psicanálise, Gestalt, não importa a escola que o terapeuta adote, o caminho sempre será em busca do estabelecimento do equilíbrio entre razão e emoção, passando pela estrada do autoconhecimento.
