CHECK IF YOUR PROJECT NEEDS TO BE REGISTERED IN SISGEN

Since 2015, Brazil has a legislation that provides for the uses of Brazilian biodiversity by science and the production chain: Law 13.123/2015, known as the Biodiversity Law. Its rules define, in terms of the area, “access to genetic heritage, protection, access to associated traditional knowledge and the sharing of benefits for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity”.

Thus, any researcher who, in order to carry out his research (experimental or theoretical), needs to access the genetic heritage and/or traditional knowledge associated with the genetic heritage, must register his research carried out since June 30, 2000. (according to Decree No. 8772/16).

WHAT IS GENETIC HERITAGE?
According to the Biodiversity Law, it is the set of information contained in the genetics of plant, animal, microbial or species of another nature, in whole or in parts (barks, leaves, roots, fur, feathers, skins, etc.), whether they are alive or dead, including substances from metabolism (such as resins, plant latex, animal venom and chemicals produced by microorganisms).

WHAT IS ASSOCIATED TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE?
Indigenous populations, traditional communities and traditional farmers have their existence based on sustainable systems of exploitation of natural resources and play a fundamental role in the protection and maintenance of biological diversity.
According to the Biodiversity Law, associated traditional knowledge refers to the information or practices of an indigenous population, traditional community or traditional farmer on the properties or direct or indirect uses associated with the genetic heritage.

After enabling the link, the researcher will be able to register information about their research.
