Created in 2015, the Institutional Relationship and Internationalization Center of Bahiana (REAII) has been promoting significant internationalization actions in the academic sphere, aiming at exchanges and joint research with teaching and research institutions in other countries, such as the Universidad de Guadalajara (MEXICO); University of Porto (PORTUGAL); Concordia University Of Edmonton (CANADA), Universidad La Coruña (SPAIN); Case Western University (USA); University of Toronto (CANADA) and Universidad de Las Islas Baleares (SPAIN). Other partnerships are ongoing.

The initiatives of the Bahiana have already been recognized internationally, so that the institution will be present at the Congress of the Americas on International Education (CAEI), which takes place from October 23rd to 25th, in Bogotá, Colombia.

The event is organized every two years in a different host country, in collaboration with regional, national and international higher education institutions and bodies, to provide a platform from which it is possible to learn about good practices, challenges and emerging trends linked to international education on the continent.

Exchanges

Some international partnerships grant annual places for students from Bahiana carry out the academic exchange through a selection process. For 2019.2/2020.1, students Lucas Hymer Flores Lopes Oliveira (Biomedicine) and Rafaela dos Santos Barros (Nursing) were approved for Concordia University of Edmonton (CANADÁ), and Débora Santos de Almeida (Physical Education), Felipe Nunes Almeida dos Santos (Physical Education), Natalia Consuelo Machado de Figueiredo (Medicine) and Beatriz Jacobina (Medicine), for the University of Porto (PORTUGAL). In these cases, the Bahiana it grants, as an incentive, a 50% discount on monthly fees.

As of 2019, undergraduate and graduate students from Bahiana They also began to apply for a 6-month scholarship from the ELAP – Emerging Leaders of Americas Program, with student Quézia Costa Dias (Psychology) being one of those awarded. Latino and Caribbean students participate in the edict, with the selection being the responsibility of the Canadian Government.

Graduate

The REAII is also responsible for supporting the graduate program in conducting lectures, seminars and international visits by professors, such as Dr. João Lima from the Johns Hopkins Hospital (USA) and Dr. Aseem Malhotra (UNITED KINGDOM), having already received students from the George Washington University, the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, the Rochester University and the University of Toronto.

Certification

The internationalization initiatives of Bahiana they also involve accreditation actions, as is the case with the Medicine course, which today is part of the group of only 32 courses in Brazil accredited by the Medical Schools Accreditation System (SAEME). The system was implemented through a partnership between the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) and the Brazilian Association of Medical Schools (ABEM) and, in April this year, it was certified by the World Federation For Medical Education. WFME), whose goal is to improve the quality of medical education around the world.

The certificate granted by WFME to SAEME recognizes the international accreditation process, post-accreditation monitoring and the decision-making process of the system in the evaluation of Brazilian medical schools. According to the SAEME portal, "the concept of Accreditation means the formal recognition of the quality of services offered by an institution. This recognition is based on standardized assessment by an independent body, which proves that an institution meets previously defined requirements and has competence to carry out its role effectively and safely."

This recognition allows medical schools that hold the SAEME seal to be automatically recognized and certified internationally. The accreditation of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública it will allow, among other prerogatives, that students who wish to do internships in the US can do so, as the ECFMG, the regulatory body for the professional practice of foreign doctors, established that, from 2023, only graduates from certified schools will be able to apply apply for internships, residencies, graduate degrees or even revalidation of diplomas in the United States.

In this regard, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) – the body for validating medical diplomas for residency or professional practice in the United States - published that from 2020 onwards, only diplomas from graduates of institutions with international accreditation will be accepted . So, the Bahiana, with the SAEME seal, already meets, in advance, the necessary requirements for graduates who wish to follow that direction.
