XV PIBIC Journey and IV Extent of Extension of the Bahiana move science and health education in the XVII MCC

The schedule of the XVII Scientific and Cultural Exhibition of Bahiana, held on October 5th and 6th, at the Cabula Academic Unit, featured a variety of actions. Among the events, the XV PIBIC Scientific Initiation Journey took place at the institution's Library. 

According to professor Maria Thais Calasans, coordinator of the journey, the great innovation this year was the evaluation of the work that took place online. "This is a positive point on account of the sustainability issue, as we have greatly reduced the use of paper and material printing. In addition, it facilitates the tabulation of data to make the award, also saving time".
 

     
Jeferson Novais, a 10th semester medical student, presented the poster "Comparative analysis of hospitalizations of patients with Polyneuropathies in the State of Bahia between 2008 and 2017". He highlights the experience of developing the work, which helped him to reflect on the fact that the data collected made possible the emergence of hypotheses. "This generation of hypotheses is what, in fact, stimulates the development of science and research". Jefferson also sees the experience of participating in the journey presenting his work as enriching. "It was an enriching experience, both for me and for the students who were watching the presentation because, from the moment I present a paper and get feedback from an advisor or researcher, everyone who is listening ends up winning."
 

     

Awards

Every year, MCC awards the most outstanding scientific works, according to the evaluation criteria proposed in the notice. The winners will be announced during the National Science and Technology Week, which takes place from October 23rd to 27th, with actions throughout the country. Check out the XVII MCC awards.

Graduation Exhibition

The external area of ​​the Library of Bahiana (UAC) has been transformed into a true science and health fair. The Medicine course focused on "Interdisciplinarity: constructive process of learning in education for cardiovascular risk prevention." Coordinated by teachers Iêda Aleluia, Karine de Souza Oliveira Santana and Sara Rocha, the space promoted health education with preventive care, including measuring blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and measuring waist circumference. Students from the 1st, 5th and 6th semesters who received visitors, collaborators and high school students from Colégio Estadual Governador Roberto Santos were involved.
 

     
“I think this relationship between high school students and higher education students is extremely important, because they exchange experiences and encourage the younger ones to enter the university environment”, declares Prof. Sara Rocha, highlighting the possibility of exchanging knowledge. “They arrive here and appropriate new knowledge and see that it is possible to reach other spaces”.

"Assessment of physical fitness for health promotion" was the activity promoted by the Physical Education course under the coordination of Prof. Clarkson Plácido C. dos Santos. Fully packed throughout the day, the Physiotherapy stand provided consultations with suction therapy and a functional elastic bandage, coordinated by professors Giovana Bergheme, João Amaro and Rachel Trinchão.
 

     
The Nursing course also worked to promote health education through the theme “Hypertension and diabetes: take care! Your heart is grateful”, a realization of HiperDia, a group of studies linked to the Cuidar Faz Bem program. The activity was coordinated by professor Claudete Varela.

The Psychology course promoted a program that included the activities “Desiring a better life: practicing mindfulness for a more meaningful life” with students and teachers Josiane Mota Lopes, Marta Vanessa Oliveira de Souza and Vânia Powell, “We need to talk about suicide : breaking taboos”, promoted by the Action and Studies Program on Suicide, under the coordination of professor Aicil Franco, in addition to the workshop “Creating Mandalas: from the magic circle to itself”.
 

     
The interdisciplinary space PETGraduaSUS invited the public to reflect on the changes that the Unified Health System has been going through in the current administration of the federal government. For Catarina Ribeiro Abreu, 6th semester dentistry student, students need to know the project so that they can better understand the reality of SUS and the losses that the system has had in recent months. “Most of the professionals that the college graduates will work in the public system. We have to have knowledge not only as users – which we all are – but as health professionals”. Among the losses, she points out the veto of public tenders for health professionals and the cancellation of the Brasil Sorridente program.


IV Extent of Extension of Bahiana

On October 6th, within the schedule of the XVII Scientific and Cultural Exhibition of Bahiana, the IV Extension Exhibition was also held, which brought together undergraduate students, professors and people from the communities involved in the extension projects of the Bahiana. In all, there were 15 conversation circles that aimed to promote the exchange of experiences among those involved in the projects, in addition to evaluating and discussing results.
 

     
"We are at the IV Extension Exhibition of the Bahiana which is a satellite event within the MCC because it is a space where all outreach programs and projects talk to each other in an interdisciplinary way”, explains Prof. Carolina Pedroza, emphasizing the involvement of undergraduate students, high school teenagers, in addition of young people and adults from the participating communities who discuss what is happening in the projects.

The extension projects and programs of the Bahiana they are socially responsible, both in the field of citizenship education and in health education.
