Last Saturday, May 31st, students and teachers from all courses at the Bahiana participated in the 11th Parish Fair of Nossa Senhora de Brotas, held on the premises of the church. Throughout the day, groups of students, supervised by professors, performed examinations, screening and care for hundreds of patients participating in the event.

Members of PET Biomedicina and the Academic League of Clinical Medicine performed tests to measure blood pressure and body mass index (BMI), capillary blood glucose and cholesterol index. Then, the patients who were indicated were referred for care with a group of medical students from the 7th semester. According to Prof. Dr. Luiz Queiroz, one of the coordinators of the action, “the service is a basic practice in medicine, where we look at some of the most important, most prevalent points: blood pressure, blood glucose, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, syndromes related to digestion. Here we have students with experience in semiology, medical clinic and outpatient care, which facilitates the service. Participating in the fair is also good training for them, as they expose themselves to a lot of patients for quicker resolutions, that's good. They are doing great!"

The 7th semester student of Medicine, Lorena Carneiro Ferreira, highlights the importance of the action that promotes contact between the student and the patient. "The more patients we see, the better. Here we basically do the care we already do in college, so we improve even more what we learned there. Last year, we kept measuring blood pressure and blood glucose. This year, we are doing more related care here. with medication prescription. So, I see this participation as a way to improve what we learned in college. The return is also to help the population in some way. I feel that I can do this with this service."

Another area worked on during the fair was the promotion of women's health. Coordinated by Maria Cristina Santana, a nurse and professor in the subject "Women's Health I" of the Medicine course, the activity had as its main focus the reproductive planning. "We brought the part of prevention and guidance on women's rights and public policies, as it is what they most need, as they do not know it. We brought this content in the form of games, dynamics to better interact with them".

Maria Cristina says that this same work is carried out in the waiting rooms of the ADAB, with the students of the Medicine course, within the Preventive Medicine discipline. "We also developed, together with students, the course for pregnant women and topics related to education and health, focusing on women's health. Cervical and breast cancer, STDs, contraceptive methods, quality of life, menstrual cycle, are addressed with a language that is easily accessible to patients," he explains.

In addition to Medicine, Biomedicine and Nursing students, students from PET Odonto and from the Physiotherapy course attended with a stand providing care to patients and guiding the public with preventive measures and health promotion. "Today, in addition to preventing falls with the elderly, we bring healthy aging," says Professor Lavínia Boaventura (Physiotherapy).

Coordinating students in the 3rd semester, where she teaches the Collective Health I discipline, the professor says that the participation of students in the fair's activities is an opportunity to put into practice what is discussed in the classroom. "The Collective Health discipline we are studying with them is now theoretical. So why not take advantage of this moment at the fair to bring this theoretical content closer to a more practical experience? This is important for them to understand these health promotion actions that we discuss so much in the classroom. The change in the epidemiological and demographic profile and regarding physiotherapy needs to be more attentive to this, not only to be a category of work for rehabilitation, but also to expand its field of action with the prevention and promotion of This notion of collective health, taking these broader actions to the community. And here they can, in a more practical way, realize how much people are open to receiving this information, to discussing these themes."

Besides Bahiana, were also involved in the Health Fair of the Parish of Nossa Senhora de Brotas the health district of Brotas, the Humberto Castro Lima Hospital and the Catholic University of Salvador.
