Orientation course for caregivers of elderly people with dementia

Extension Activity

The recent increase in life expectancy of the Brazilian population is the most important demographic factor in the context of non-communicable chronic diseases. Aging leads to an increase in the prevalence, mortality and, in particular, the simultaneity of these diseases with varying degrees of disability, often with loss of autonomy. Among the potentially disabling chronic illnesses that affect the elderly is dementia.

Dementia, which is usually progressive, causes memory loss and other cognitive impairments. In the initial phase, the person needs supervision, but with the worsening of symptoms, in the intermediate phase, there is a change in behavior and the need for assistance for routine activities and, in the final or advanced phase of the disease, when they do not recognize family members or himself, the elderly becomes unable to move, becoming totally dependent on caregivers.

Faced with this reality and the need to provide home services to people with dementia, it is necessary to qualify people for this new field of professional work that involves the care and monitoring of the elderly at home. In this course, theoretical content and simulation of practice will be addressed. The course will have 16 hours of theoretical and practical. Classes will take place on the campus of Brotas da BAHIANA and simulations in the Occupational Therapy laboratory and service.
