A Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública The “April for Peace” event took place on April 16th and 17th, 2026, bringing together experts, researchers, social movements, and the community at the Cabula Campus. With free admission, the event promoted reflection on contemporary challenges related to violence, social inequalities, mental health, and climate change, proposing pathways for building a Culture of Peace. Over the two days, attendees participated in lectures, panels, circle discussions, and cultural activities organized around thematic areas such as education, restorative justice, social health, and human rights.
The opening featured a performance by dancer Alice Becker and VJ Gabiru, followed by a reflection led by the rector of [the institution/organization]. BahianaDr. Maria Luisa Carvalho Soliani. The event included the participation of academic leaders and national guests, who highlighted the role of education and institutions in promoting values of coexistence and social transformation. On the occasion, the rector emphasized the collective responsibility in building a more peaceful society: “We dream of a day when we will no longer need to talk about peace, because it will already be established. I think everyone here believes in that. And, for that to exist, it is enough for each one to do their part and take care of what is around them.” The vice-rector and coordinator of the Medicine course, Dr. Humberto de Castro Lima Filho, reinforced the pedagogical dimension of the theme. “Our students, teachers, and collaborators must be agents of social transformation for peace. I think we should place peace in our pedagogical projects, as an educational objective, and build a Medicine for Peace, a Biomedicine, Physical Education, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Dentistry, and Psychology for peace!”, declared the vice-rector.
Among the program highlights was the participation of experts, such as Lia Diskin, founder of the Palas Athena Association, who offered reflections on coexistence and social relations as the basis for peace. “Peace has gained diverse and flexible meanings. We will talk about the culture of coexistence because our problem lies in coexisting—within families, where we live, within professional and institutional establishments—coexisting as citizens,” she stated. The event, which brought together various entities, was organized by Professor Sandra Brasil, president of the Commission for the Culture of Peace and Contemplative Practices, and André Soliani, director of Institutional Development.
