In commemoration of the National HTLV Awareness Day, celebrated on March 23, the Research Support Center (NAP) of the University of São Paulo (USP) held the 1st HTLV Summit, bringing together national and international researchers, managers from the Ministry of Health, representatives from epidemiological surveillance, healthcare professionals, members of civil society, and people living with the virus.
During the program, the Bernardo Galvão Filho Award was presented, granted by the National Network of People Living with HTLV to individuals who have achieved scientific success and social commitment. Professor Bernardo Galvão participated in the ceremony online. He was responsible for implementing the HTLV Center of [Institution Name - missing from original text]. Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, now recognized as a benchmark in the care, research and monitoring of people living with HTLV.
The honoree of this edition was federal deputy Luiza Erundina, recognized for her work in defending human rights and social justice. In her speech, she highlighted that the recognition extends to patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, and activists who work to increase the visibility of HTLV. The event also included the participation of the HTLVida Association, represented by its current president, Márcia Carneiro, and its founding president, Adijeane Oliveira, strengthening the dialogue between science, healthcare, and social control.
