A night celebrating science, research, and medicine. This was the Roberto Santos Award ceremony, with the first three places won by medical students from Bahiana. The ceremony took place last Thursday, July 24th, at the Association's headquarters Bahiana of Medicine. The Dean of the Bahiana, Dr. Maria Luisa Carvalho Soliani, the coordinator of the Master's and Doctorate program in Medicine and Human Health, Dr. Ana Marice Ladeia, and the professor and coordinator of the Neuroscience Center of Bahiana, Dr. Bernardo Galvão Castro Filho, who, on the occasion, was awarded the Scientific Merit Honor Award.
The final paper "Association between the risk of obstructive sleep apnea and stroke recurrence: a prospective cohort" by Aurea Maria Novais, supervised by Professor Renan Carvalho Castello Branco, won third place among the evening's award winners. Under the supervision of Professor Luís Cláudio Correia, Luiza Sampaio Alonso Baz was awarded second place for her paper "Cognitive Biases and Medical Decision-Making: The Similarity Heuristic Interference in Clinical Reasoning." Final-year medical student Ana Luísa Valois won first place for her paper "Association between Endothelial Dysfunction and Metabolomics in Children and Adolescents with Sickle Cell Anemia," supervised by Professor Dr. Ana Marice Ladeia. For her achievement, Novais presented a summary of her research to those in attendance.
"It's very rewarding to finish medical school with this feeling of having done my job well. I'm very grateful to my advisor," said Ana Luísa, who also won third place at the Bahia Cardiology Congress for the same work. For Áurea Maria Novais, being able to produce work that has clinical relevance and changes behavior, while still an undergraduate, is a fantastic opportunity. "When we do our best work, we hope to reap the rewards of that work. For those who do research, the best reward is knowing that knowledge is being disseminated and knowing that the work is relevant," said Áurea. Luiza Sampaio, a recent medical graduate, emphasizes the importance of Bahiana in the construction of their training. “The Bahiana It's an institution that, from the beginning, has always strongly encouraged research development and thinking outside the box. Throughout my studies, I had the opportunity to be part of the Resca (Acute Coronary Syndrome Network) research group with Professor Luís Correia, and he is an extraordinary mind. It was a privilege to work with him. Research captivates me, and I'm interested in continuing to develop it," the doctor stated.
