The development of a policy that values diversity, through a set of inclusive initiatives, led to Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública to be one of the national highlights in the GPTW Diversity Ranking in the Ethnic-Racial categories, with 2nd place; LGBT+, with 7th place; 50+, with 8th place; and Women, with 14th place. The awards ceremony took place on June 24th in São Paulo. The institution was represented by Louise Tango, People Development Supervisor. "The achievement of Bahiana "The GPTW Diversity 2024 award represents an important milestone in our institutional trajectory. For the first time, we were recognized nationally in four categories, reinforcing our commitment to promoting inclusive, respectful, and equitable environments," says Allana Machado, Human Resources and Development Manager.
According to Allana, this year's results reflect the institution's steady growth, having ranked 22nd in the Women's ranking in 2022 and now reaching 14th. This growth is reflected across all categories. In the LGBTI+ ranking, the institution rose from 20th to 7th. "We made significant progress in the Ethnic-Racial ranking, from 15th in 2023 to 2nd in 2024; and from 9th to 8th in the 50+ ranking. These advances are the result of an institutional strategy that places people at the center of its actions and reaffirms the Bahiana as a national benchmark in diversity and inclusion. It is an immense honor to be part of an institution that values people, respects differences, and lives a truly inclusive culture on a daily basis.”
The manager further explains that the awards reflect the various structured and ongoing initiatives. Key initiatives include the implementation of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) Committee and Affinity Groups. Other inclusive initiatives include the Educational Trails Training activities, which include awareness-raising activities, discussion groups, and literacy sessions for new members, leaders, and teams on unconscious bias, structural racism, inclusive communication, and anti-discrimination practices. Regarding its inclusive recruitment policy, Bahiana uses artificial intelligence to screen resumes and affirmative action to increase representation in selection processes. The institution also offers a Diversity Trainee Program, an Endocrinology Clinic for Transgender People, and the MEDI+ Program, which offers free access to the Medical School program. Bahiana, with all the necessary support until graduation for students from public and low-income schools, which can transform the future of these young people.
