A differentiated and empathetic perspective makes all the difference in providing humanized care. This was the case with Dr. Lise Oliveira, who graduated in Medicine from Bahiana, in June 2024, who experienced, in the early hours of last Monday (9), an unusual service at the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Brotas. When treating a 28-year-old woman complaining of abdominal pain, Dr. Lise realized that this was no ordinary condition, but rather a woman in labor. "During my training as a Bahiana, in the six years of Medicine, from the first semesters, we had practices in relation to a more humanized medicine. The Bahiana It is indeed a unique medical school, which makes a point of bringing us into this reality of a truly more human, more horizontal contact with the patient and with all health professionals.”

Dr. Lise says that the patient arrived at the unit in a lot of pain and very nervous, and having active listening and acting without judgment helped her understand the case more easily. "Given this delicate, unexpected situation, which required a differentiated and rapid case management, this required one of the pillars that Bahiana always emphasized: empathy. Not the kind we work on in our speech, but rather implemented in practice," says the doctor. She states that, together with the health team at the UPA in Brotas, sought to offer special treatment, as it was the birth of a child. "So, this empathy, in practice, means knowing how to welcome the person calmly, without rushing, acting quickly, but respecting that unique moment, that story that will certainly be marked in the life of this mother, this family, and ours, because it is truly beautiful to witness a case like this, so unexpected and with such a beautiful outcome," he adds.

The doctor also states that a humanized approach made all the difference in her successful care. "A humanized approach makes all the difference, in fact, in any aspect of our lives. Especially when we work in a profession where we deal with lives, with people who are vulnerable, who need our help and, often, our assistance," said Dr. Lise Oliveira, emphasizing the multidisciplinary nature of healthcare. "I often say that there comes a point when, when handling any case, whether clinical or surgical, the doctor can only go so far. In my training at Bahiana"We constantly bring a humanized medicine that integrates the physical, mental, spiritual, and energetic aspects. This is essential for our practice to be as complete and comprehensive as possible. This does make a difference because I see the results in my practice. It's about how we can touch the hearts of those who need our help, those who often come to us for help," said Dr. Lise Oliveira.
