The Neuroscience Research Group of Bahiana attended the 5th edition of the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Academy, an international scientific event held in May in São Paulo. The event annually brings together spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) researchers to promote the dissemination of studies and the exchange of scientific knowledge.

the group of Bahiana was represented by its leader, professor of medicine Marcela Câmara Costa, who, on the occasion, presented the theme “Evolution of SMA phenotypes, what are we missing?” In her approach, the researcher from Bahiana discussed phenotype change and the limitations of current functional scales. The EK2 scale was then presented as a complementary and sensitive scale for assessing multiple domains of non-ambulatory patients. The scale was validated in the Professional Master's Program in Health Technologies at Bahiana by academic Juliana Pimentel. The dissertation “Translation, cross-cultural adaptation and validation into Brazilian Portuguese of the Egen Klassifikation scale version 2 (EK2) in patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Spinal Muscular Atrophy” was supervised by Professor Marcela Câmara Costa.
