Federated athletes from various sports can now be treated at the Cardiovascular Assessment Clinic Bahiana, an initiative carried out within the scope of the extension by the Physical Education and Medicine courses, whose first day of activities took place last Saturday, November 23, at the Teaching-Assistance Outpatient Clinic of Bahiana Health, on Campus Brotas. Students from both courses and professors Luiz Ritt, medical director of the Teaching-Care Outpatient Clinic at Bahiana and cardiologist, and professor Roque Ribeiro Sanches Filho.

Throughout the morning, the athletes who signed up for the service underwent a cardiovascular evaluation, through a consultation, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, laboratory tests and an evaluation with the Physical Education team, including bioimpedance, allowing a more accurate functional physiological evaluation. All athletes who will be evaluated participated in an action with the Clinical Emergency League of Bahiana, who trained them in cardiac resuscitation. Renata Gouveia, a boxer for 14 years, says she had already undergone evaluations, but never in such depth. “Today’s evaluation was very specific, allowing us to see the fat, the lean mass, what needs to be improved, where things are good. I will definitely take these results to my coach,” says the athlete.

Dr. Ritt highlights, among the benefits of the program, the provision of a reference service for athletes, which until now did not exist in Bahia. “Multidisciplinary interaction is an important point of this initiative, as we have medical and physical education students working together to benefit these athletes. Another point is the possibility of conducting research, which is another pillar we have in our program.” Bahiana Health. This data can be compiled to create a profile of athletes from Bahia,” the professor points out. For medical student Lara Araújo Viana, in her 8th semester of medical school, the initiative is very important for athletes. “This is a population that has some findings that need to be investigated. These are people who perform high-impact exercises, which can end up masking some pathologies. I learned a lot by doing the echocardiogram. The possibility of being able to analyze the echo and electrocardiogram will be a differentiator in relation to those who did not participate in this extension,” says the student.
