Episodes of sudden death and illness linked to cardiovascular issues in athletes have been increasingly frequent. Understanding that athletes need frequent cardiovascular assessment, at least at the beginning of the season, and currently there is no outpatient clinic in the Unified Health System, here in Salvador, with this focus, Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública has just launched the Cardiovascular Assessment Clinic for Athletes. The unit aims to perform cardiovascular and physiological assessments on federated athletes who are SUS users.
The initiative will be carried out as an extension activity, through a partnership between the Medicine and Physical Education courses, under the coordination of professor Luiz Ritt, Medical Director of Bahiana Health, and Professor Clarcson Plácido, coordinator of the Physical Education course at Bahiana. The first service will take place on November 23rd, starting at 7 am, at ADAB.
In the outpatient clinic, athletes will be evaluated from a cardiovascular point of view, through consultation, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, laboratory tests and an evaluation with the Physical Education team from a functional physiological point of view. All athletes who will be evaluated, in an action with the Emergency League of Bahiana, will also be trained in cardiac resuscitation. To participate, interested parties must access the application form.
