Professor Humberto Castro Lima BahianaOn October 3, 2024, we celebrate the centenary of the birth of Professor Humberto Castro Lima, who left us in 2008, but his achievements, teachings and legacies are present in the memories of the people and institutions that had the privilege of knowing him. Son of Cesar de Castro Lima and Leonor Damásio de Castro Lima, he was born in the city of Salvador on October 3, 1924. He completed his initial studies at the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, from which he graduated in 1948 and, with the aim of deepening his studies in the field of ophthalmology, he went to the United States where he completed postgraduate studies as a resident and surgeon at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

With the desire to bring medical care to those who need it most, he created the Brazilian Institute of Ophthalmology and Prevention of Blindness (IBOPC) in 1959. Today, it is one of the most important hospitals in the area in the country. From 1992, he was General Coordinator of the Foundation Bahiana for Science Development, contributing fundamentally to the physical, administrative and pedagogical expansion of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública.

Throughout his career, he helped to create several national and international institutions: he was a full member of the Bahia Academy of Medicine, founder of the Pan-American Glaucoma Society, member of the Pan-American Society of Ophthalmology, patron of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, among others.

In reference to the centenary of his birth, a book in his honor is currently being organized. Prepared based on archival research carried out at the Documentation and Memory Center of the Bahiana (CEDOM), personal collection, testimonies from colleagues, friends, employees and family, the launch is scheduled for next year.

Paying tribute to Professor Humberto Castro Lima is a way of celebrating the ideals, projects and dreams of a man who never gave up on offering the best to the world. As Dr. Maria Luísa Soliani rightly defined, Professor Humberto was a “Master who never tired of teaching”.
