The Medicine course of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública was recently certified by the Medical School Accreditation System (SAEME), being the only one in the state of Bahia to receive this certification. The certification ceremony took place during the 10st Meeting of Accredited Medical Schools of SAEME-CFM, held on July XNUMXth, at the headquarters of the Federal Council of Medicine, in Brasília. Representing the institution were the vice-rector and coordinator of the Medicine course, Prof. Dr. Humberto Castro Lima, and professors Rafael Lélis, Marta Menezes and Iêda Aleuia.

Before this new certification, only 40 medical courses were accredited by SAEME, including 6 in the Northeast. With the new batch, the number has increased to 52 institutions. The system is the result of an important partnership between the Brazilian Association of Medical Education (ABEM) and the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM). In order to accredit a medical course, it examines aspects such as the institutional context, the pedagogical project, the educational program, and the faculty and students, in addition to the educational environment. The accreditation certificate is valid for six years, which encourages accredited institutions to continually maintain high quality. Bahiana had already been credited in 2019.

Created in 2015, Saeme-CFM is fully funded by CFM and is completely free for educational institutions. Medical school accreditation is carried out by organizations internationally recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), such as Saeme-CFM, the only accrediting entity authorized in Brazil.
