"Practice in Psychology in the Trans Person Care Outpatient Clinic: challenges, achievements and perspectives.” This was the theme of the inaugural class of the Life Cycle Development I component, of the Psychology course, which took place on the morning of August 9, at the Campus Brotas. The chosen theme dialogues directly with the theme adopted by the Bahiana to welcome its new undergraduate students for semester 2024.2: "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in health training", whose program began on August 2, with a live broadcast on the institution's YouTube channel. Throughout the week, the new Psychology course students participated in several meetings with academic groups, lectures and dialogues. The activity held on August 9th closed the program, introducing new members of the Bahiana the institution's practice in DE&I, through its Trans Person Care Outpatient Clinic.
The inaugural class consisted of a round table with the participation of professor Carle Porcino, coordinator of the Outpatient Clinic, and academics Antônio Eduardo Marques, Bruno Castro Dantas, Maria Fernanda Britto, among others. “I have always lived in a reality where this issue of LGBT+ people does not exist and, when it does exist, it is far from me. My friends, for the most part, are 'straight', I have no knowledge of anyone in my family who has suffered from this. So, yesterday, at the meeting with the Academic League of Gender and Sexuality, I was shocked by what I saw, because it was a completely different reality from mine, and I never imagined it would be so painful. So I want to know more. As a future psychologist, I want to know more so I can recognize people as people and not as impositions of society. It was a good shock, a shock of knowledge!”, declared 1st semester Psychology student Maria Luiza Fonseca Carmo.
"A Bahiana has dared to discuss the topic of transgenderism from a trans person. The Brazilian transnational movement understands that, in discussions about trans people, trans people need to be present, this is our motto: 'Nothing for us and/or about us without us'. Think about the construction of the Outpatient Clinic in Bahiana, within ADAB, which is a teaching-assistance outpatient clinic, is essential, it is a unique experience within the training process, both for workers, but also for future professionals in the health field. Spaces like these promote changes in the field of health and can transform lives that are here today and those that will be in their work spaces in the future, caring for and serving so many people. What we, trans people, need and demand is that we be heard as people. Transgenderness is a nuance of our lives", declared professor Carle Porcino who, on the occasion, also shared her life story as a trans woman.
