Researcher and professor at the Bahiana receives title of immortal from the Brazilian Academy of Sciences

Researcher and professor at the Bahiana doctor Bernardo Galvão Castro Filho received from the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, the diploma of Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC). The delivery ceremony took place this Wednesday (10/05), in Rio de Janeiro, during the ABC Magna Meeting, which was also attended by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, the president of CNPq, Ricardo Galvão , and other members of the entity.

The chair destined for Professor Bernardo Galvão is awarded to the area of ​​Health Sciences, and the choice for his name was due to his academic and scientific career. In addition to being a member of the ABC, Bernardo Galvão is a member of the Bahia Academy of Medicine, the Bahia Academy of Sciences, the Council of the International Society of Retrovirology, the Board of Trustees of the José Silveira Foundation, the Assembly of the Brazilian Institute of Ophthalmology and Prevention of Cegueira and member of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine.

Bernardo Galvão Castro Filho holds a PhD in Medicine from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and is a professor at the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública (Bahiana) and researcher at Fiocruz. He is one of the great scientific leaders in the fight against AIDS in Brazil, having isolated the virus that causes this immunodeficiency for the first time in Latin America, thus contributing to the implementation of screening for this virus in the country's blood banks. Currently, in Bahiana, coordinates the Integrative and Multidisciplinary Care Center for HTLV Carriers (CHTLV).
