The Childhood Voiding Disorders Center Bahiana (CEDIMI) was awarded for the work "Association Between Rectal Diameter and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) In Children" at the Congress of the Ibero-American Society of Urology (CAU) in 2019. The study, presented by the master's student Dr. Ângelo Campos, was carried out by the master's students Leonardo de Souza, Glicia de Abreu, Eneida Dourado and Ana Paula Shimitz, under the coordination of Dr. Ubirajara Barros (CEDIMI coordinator). The annual event took place in Buenos Aires (Argentina), from October 2nd to 5th, and was attended by guests, national and international, with great prestige in the area. The study demonstrated by Dr. Ângelo Campos is aimed at children from the Ibero-American region and received the award for the best work presented at the congress.

In the study, pediatric constipation was evaluated using the standard exam, which is ultrasonography, as it is capable of measuring the diameter of the rectum. The results achieved with the research reveal that this examination has no role in the analysis of this issue. The knowledge that the research provided generates a change in pediatric approaches, especially in relation to the type of diagnosis. “The fact that we know that the ultrasound exam is not effective in diagnosing constipation reduces costs in the areas of health and education. Therefore, it is a very significant result”, concludes Professor Ubirajara Barroso.
