Yellow September - PAES cycle of actions

Share

The Program of Actions and Studies on Suicide - PAES, from Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, carried out a cycle of actions in reference to the international month of suicide prevention, also known as “Yellow September”. The study group, coordinated by Professor Ailcil Franco, completed three years of activities.

Ailcil says that the emergence of the group was based on complaints from students about the lack of debates about suicide. Currently, there are weekly meetings that are open to students from other institutions. On the first day, September 14, the action was held at Campus Cabula. The program included several lectures and discussions between several courses, with the participation of more than 170 students. On the second day, September 21, the cine debate took place with the screening of the film “Elena” (2012), at Campus Brotas.

The objective of the debate film was to address postvention, which is the attention and care that should be taken with family members and friends who have lost people to suicide, since this typification of death generates a lot of guilt or even new occurrences. According to the coordinator of PAES, the exact causes of this phenomenon are not yet known, but some scientific observations suggest genetic predisposition, although this evidence does not always apply. An example of this are communities where a suicide provokes others, even if people are not related. “These are lines that need to be studied”, concludes the professor. After the documentary, the class was divided into discussion groups to reflect the aspects of post-suicide.

To complete the cycle of actions, on September 28, at Campus Brotas, there was the presence of two specialists: Wilson Alves Senne, associate professor at the Institute of Psychology at the Federal University of Bahia, and Luciene Figueiredo, professor and master in Family at Contemporary Society. Speakers presented the impacts of technology and the increase in suicide in contemporary society.

For Professor Wilson Alves, initiatives such as the one at PAES are always important, especially for those who are at the beginning of the course, as contact with other professors, students and professionals benefits the individual's education. The 10th semester student of Psychology and member of PAES, Camila Viana, who explained about the possibility of suicide, emphasizes the purpose of the activities: to provoke reflection on the way “we can deal with the issue, even if it is in our own affective core”.

Lorena Muniz, a psychologist at the Santa Izabel hospital, also explained about the post-vention. The psychologist, who works with patients who arrive at the clinic due to a suicide attempt, highlights that it is necessary to align procedures with the team, from subjective urgency to the imminent risk of life, through measures that can assess case by case, preventing new attempts.

“The objective is to offer the subject effective support. The information helps a lot, as the topic is still taboo in our society, including in the health area itself. Some professionals end up passing on certain beliefs to family members in this situation, which intensifies the suffering”, adds Lorena, who recommends expanding this knowledge to other institutions, since suicide is a multifactorial process that involves several aspects.

The former student of Bahiana and psychologist, Júlio César Requião, points out the need to demystify the issue in order to better welcome patients and understand their particularities. Following this premise, Deivison Julião, a Nursing student at Unifacs, very satisfied with the program, reports how gratifying it was to experience the debates that connected students and professionals: “This three-day cycle motivated the participation of everyone, even those who did not works directly with psychology, as is my case”.
