A Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública promoted the Seminar “Health care for the LGBTQI+ population: are you empowered?”. The event took place on September 20 and aimed to discuss contemporary issues related to the health of the LGBTQI+ population in the university context, in addition to understanding the biopsychosocial subject inserted in health practices. The seminar was attended by students from various institutions, professors and health professionals.

Under the coordination of professors Marlene Barreto Santos Miranda, psychoanalyst and master in Family at the Contemporary Society (UCSAL), and Ricardo Araújo da Silva, master in Deontology and Legal Dentistry (USP), doctoral candidate in Public Health (ISC-UFBA). The event was held from 08:17 am to 30:XNUMX pm, in Auditorium I of the Bahiana.

To kick off the meeting, the documentary "Pro Que Der e Vier" (2017), produced by IHAC/ISC/FACOM-UFBA, through Professor Ricardo's doctoral program, was shown. The medium-length portrayed the story of nine trans women living in Salvador, based on their narrative. The plot dealt with topics such as the discovery of transsexuality, social revelation, living in society and in the family, prejudices suffered and self-acceptance.

After the film was shown, Professor Ricardo welcomed it and presented the first debate table, composed by Inês Santos, mother of homosexuals; Paulete Furacão, trans woman, social educator, LGBTQI activist and member of the State Forum for Transgender Policy; Father Alfredo, one of the founders of the Conceição Macedo crèche, which provides care to children with HIV, as well as their families; Symmy Larrat, a trans woman, coordinator of the Network for Confronting Violence against LGBT in Bahia; and Alana Rocha, trans woman, journalist and LGBTQI activist.

The program covered themes such as "Body Change and the Health of the Trans Population", "Transsexualizing Process" and "Challenges in the Academy", in addition to the roundtable "Gender diversity and its representations". For Marlene Barreto, who teaches the curricular component of Public Health 3, it was necessary to think about a theme related to public health, since the event was correlated to the schedule of this component whose professors Antônio Pitta, Patrícia Siguri, Mônica Moura and Ricardo are part of.

“That's why Professor Ricardo and I thought of a theme that covered more than the area of dentistry,” observes Marlene. The teacher ponders that, as there had not been a large event with this theme, the main reflection, above all, was based on the training of students as a trainer for working with the LGBTQI population.

“So, for the speakers, we opted for people who were active and who are part of the implementation of public policies. We also promote discussions on the processes of harmonization and sexual reassignment, in the context of health, with professionals who serve this population”. Thus, there was an interconnection between militancy, civil society and the health area so that the entire institution could have access and debate on this subject.

Paulete Furacão praised the initiative: “the Bahiana was very happy to organize this content and for being open to diversity, committed to training professionals who will work with a vulnerable population. Nothing better than understanding what kind of audience this is”, he adds. Symmy Larrat, on the other hand, assesses that “moments like this are important, as there is usually an absence of these themes in the academies. When the professional arrives at the service and is faced with these transitioned users, he does not know how to deal”.

Symmy emphasizes that with difficulties in understanding the bodies of transvestites or transsexuals, poorly prepared referral is inevitable. “Talking to professionals who in a few years' time will see patients in these conditions helps to change the cruel reality of exclusion”, he concludes.

Luiza Ribeiro, coordinator of People Development and educator, emphasizes that actions like this translate the mission of Bahiana: training people to take care of other people based on respect, humanization and affection, based on a well-studied and well-applied science. “I have no doubt that as our students participate in meetings promoted by the teachers themselves, that is, they are included in the curriculum, training is increased”.

Luiza adds that the perspective changes when looking at reports from people who experience a daily struggle, as there is awareness in the performance of professional activities. For the pedagogue, the student of Bahiana he is already recognized in clinics and hospitals as a distinguished student because he is trained in an environment of dialogue, new experiences and empathy. “I congratulate the Dentistry professors, I also congratulate the course itself and all the people who attended”, he concludes.

The 2nd semester medical student, Antônio Neto, shows that, especially in the Medicine course, there is no special preparation to deal with the LGBTQI community, therefore, the initiative of Bahiana "opens the eyes of students to improve the treatment of these patients from screening, arrival at the office and outpatient care to the continuation of referral, outside the clinic." According to Antônio, it is this care that impacts the lives of people and the community.

Students Larissa Santana and Camila Guedes, from the 7th semester of Dentistry, considered the proposal very interesting because it is a relevant topic that needs to be debated in all areas of health. “It's a reality that is not so much discussed in the courses and in the classroom”, emphasizes Larissa, praising the lectures and the elucidated contents. Camila explains that awareness is essential, “it is necessary to be aware of the other and demystify taboos that only hinder the service that is right. This effort of Bahiana it's quite significant, since we need to include everyone” reflects the student.
