The fourth edition of the “Caring for Good Health Fair” took place in the community of Narandiba, on August 25, 2018, at the Deputado Gersino Coelho Municipal School. This is another great social responsibility action by Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, in partnership with various entities, such as the Cabula/Beirú Sanitary District, the AMONA Community Association, the ODEART Cultural Association and the Cabula City Hall.

Throughout the day, the Fair offered several activities that involved health promotion and disease prevention. According to teacher Aidê Nunes, “the character of this event is extremely important, because the Bahiana advocates interprofessional care”. With this in mind, the management of spaces and themes were built with the participation of students from all courses, through teacher mediation. “The idea was to challenge students to build together proposals for attention and care for the other”, ponders the teacher.

Aidê, who participated in the general coordination of the event with professors Ana Mª Santos, Claudete Varela, Rose Freitas, Selena Dubois and Suzana Vasconcelos, also highlighted the role of the academy in leaving the usual environment to dialogue with the community. From this dialogue, it was possible to understand the epidemiological profile of the neighborhood and identify the themes that deserved greater focus, they were: prevention of teenage pregnancy, care for the elderly group and guidance for pre-diabetics. However, the cultural value of the community could also be presented in some spaces, such as the turban workshop.

In the 13 stands, information related to hypertension and diabetes, rare diseases, mental health, oral health, women, men, the elderly, the demystification of epilepsy, among others, were explained and illustrated by the monitors and coordinators. Letícia Requião, a medical student and monitor of the 'Convivendo com Epilepsy' stand, highlighted how much it is necessary to bring content that makes the population aware: “through studies, I can help people who need information. Epilepsy is a disease that may affect around 30 people in Salvador alone. It is a considerable audience that deserves attention”, he concludes.

The cultural presentations organized by the Centro Social Urbano de Narandiba and Associação AMONA mixed capoeira, maculelê and samba de roda. The Conviver Group, formed by elderly women from the Cabula region, performed a performance of 'Dança da Peneira'. The Angels of Nursing of the Bahiana, who organized games and games for the children.

For Roselene Santos, 48, a resident of the Narandiba neighborhood, the initiative was quite interesting, because in this way, she was informed about various topics that she did not know about and could even pass on to friends and family.

Lorena Sena, coordinator of the Cabula/Beiru Sanitary District, explained that the partnership with Bahiana started at the 2017 Health Fair. At the time, the initiative was held in Mata Escura. “This year, we were barely able to hold the fair in this district. But, with efforts, we reached its realization in Narandiba, a community that lacks services that are often not available in primary care”, reveals Lorena.

“Because the Narandiba community lacks several services, such as medical assistance, it is necessary to have the support of public and private entities, which, together, transformed the fair into a great benefit for the population”, adds Everton Silva, president of the Association of Residents of Narandiba – AMONA. He ends by thanking the partnership: “AMONE thanks you and is always available to support initiatives like this”.

In addition to the Cabula/Beirú Sanitary District and AMONA, the partners were present: Municipality-Bairro do Cabula, CCZ/SMS, Doron Family Health Unit, Humberto Castro Lima Hospital, SINEBAHIA, Narandiba Urban Social Center, Embeleze Institute, Association Cultural ODEART, Ideb Institute, HTLVida Association, employees, students, teachers and coordinators of courses at Bahiana.

Miguel Bastos, manager of the City Hall-Bairro do Cabula, observes that when people dedicate themselves in solidarity to activities that benefit so many others, the real feeling of community is demonstrated, “that's why this event is so representative”.

The commercial supervisor of Instituto Embeleze, Joseana Rocha, explains that the action signed through a partnership with Professor Aidê was intended to provide self-esteem and growth opportunities for the region's residents and that these purposes were achieved.

 IV Health Fair: results

The edition had the participation of 1083 citizens who experienced the stands and services provided. Of these, 38 family fathers left with a letter for employment, mediated by SINEBAHIA. In addition, the turban workshop, coordinated by ODEART, accounted for 200 people, while Instituto Embeleze served 40 people.

Since the inception of the Fair, 4 years ago, the perspective of developing actions to promote health and disease prevention, as well as valuing the integration “academy and community” have always been the main objectives. And, in this edition, one of the highlights was the very large participation of neighborhood residents. With this, to give voice to this community, the Palco das Artes, where local productions could be prestigious, was widely used.

The manager of the Deputado Gersino Municipal School, Coelho Kátia Silva, explained: “a priori, there was a meeting with the teacher Ana Mª Santos. In this meeting, the space was evaluated and approved, as well as the date, making the fair that happened with great success possible”.

Kátia emphasizes: “the path is guidance and education, so that paradigms related to prejudice are broken”. She noticed, for example, a movement on the part of men in search of care and clarification of doubts, even though they themselves did not have the habit of seeking medical care voluntarily.

“The fair benefited people from the Narandiba community and other neighborhoods, including students and parents from the Deputado Gersino Coelho Municipal School. It happened in a big way and involved the forces of all the partners involved. The biggest gain was in relation to knowledge, without a doubt”, evaluated the manager.
