"Our goal is not just to sensitize students to donate today, but to become lifelong donors." The words of the medical student and monitor of the Center for Teaching and Research in Anatomy (NEPA), Milton Melo, summarize the spirit of the “Being Bahiana is to have Saúde na Veia”, whose 3rd edition took place on Saturday, February 18, at the Foundation of Hematology and Hemotherapy of Bahia (Hemoba). The activities were aimed at students from the 1st semester of courses in Biomedicine, Physical Education, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Medicine and Dentistry.

The program included classes addressing issues of blood biomorphology. The contents were presented by student monitors from NEPA, from the Extension Nucleus in Molecular and Cell Biology (NEBIO), from the Morphofunctional Sciences Group (GCM), in addition to monitors of Anatomy of Physiotherapy; Anatomy of Physical Education; Nursing First Aid; First Aid in Dentistry; Histology of Biomedicine and members of the Emergency Nursing League. The action also brought together 17 professors from the courses of Biomedicine, Physical Education, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Medicine and Dentistry. According to Milton Melo, “the project combined the various courses at Bahiana to integrate all areas of health, encouraging an entrepreneurial attitude in students in promoting social action”.

The professor of the Medicine course and NEPA coordinator, Rinaldo Barros, reinforces the importance of the interdisciplinary nature of the action. "It's with actions like this that we see how the Bahiana appreciates that courses and health professionals should work in an interdisciplinary way. Often, we see multidisciplinarity, many courses, many specialties working, but not articulating between them. In interdisciplinarity, we have several areas working together and in an articulated way to promote health. Health is only promoted with interdisciplinarity”.

Degree in Physical Education and now doing a bachelor's degree in Bahiana, Aniel Pereira Azevedo reports that the union of courses shows that health is integrated. “The Physical Education course has a very good participation in the health area. Both licensed and bachelor, I can work on aspects of health prevention in elementary and high school and the bachelor's degree in Physical Education focused on health will help a lot in that”.

Clinical case

In order to raise awareness and show the importance of blood donation, a clinical case dramatized by student monitors was presented to the freshmen. It was the story of an 18-year-old boy who, under the influence of drugs, threw himself from the top of a building. The reliability of the situation moved the medical student Breno Souto. “This simulation showed that, many times, some patients die just because of the lack of blood. I didn't know that the Bahiana I carried out projects like this, but when I found out, I was very happy. I think it's very important to contribute to society”, declared the freshman who promptly made his first donation during the project. "It's such a simple act, anyone can come here and spend a few minutes that could save many lives."

Graduated in Design, a profession she practiced for seven years, Camila Freitas, now a student of the 1st semester of Dentistry, says that, being new in the health area, everything surprises her. “It's all very new to me. I see here the importance of this initiative and I intend to take this knowledge home, to friends, in short, to take more information to people who are not in this environment”.

Her fellow student, Beatriz Barreto, says she felt touched by the clinical case. “Even though it's not a real scene, the simulation was a good experience for us. She touched me, but it also made me more prepared for the future”.

With the action, the Bahiana estimated to collect 100 bags of blood. The initiative's success exceeded expectations, totaling 120 bags collected.
