A Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública held, on May 29, the Annual Meeting of the HTLV Center, at the Academic Unit Brotas.

The event is the result of a partnership between the Nursing course, the Tutorial Education Program (PET) of Physiotherapy/Fapesb and the HTLVida Association with the objective of bringing together all patients, professors and students to discuss the projects carried out during the semester, improvements and innovations in disease treatments and clarifying doubts for HTLV patients.

According to the coordinator of the HTLV Integrative and Multidisciplinary Center, Prof. Bernardo Galvão, the meeting is essential to assess and improve the quality of care. “It is a biannual event, held together with users (carriers, patients and family members) which aims to improve adherence to monitoring and reinforce prevention measures”, he explains.

The president of the HTLVida Association, Adjeane Oliveira, reports that the meeting allows for a dialogue between the HTLV Center, patients and the association. “We agreed at the end of last year to have three meetings with the members of the center so that they can give us feedback on the projects and what has been done in favor of HTVL patients”, he points out.

The intern at the HTLV Center, a student in the Psychology course at Bahiana of the 10th semester, Lucas de Medeiros, congratulates the initiative of the HTLVida group together with the Bahiana. “The HTLVida Group is very important, an initiative of the carriers that brings a good perspective of knowledge multiplication, for people who do not have access to information and, with that, we extend our work”.

HTLV is a disease that affects the sciatic nerve and one of the main dangers of the disease is paralysis. The carrier Maria da Conceição, 52, emphasizes that she got all the support she needed at the center and that the disease causes terrible limitations to her daily life. “I'm new here in Bahia and I discovered the disease in 2011. Bahiana and I had the opportunity to learn more about the problem, as I have serious attacks of urinary incontinence, back pain and heaviness in my legs. If I don't take care of myself, I can become paraplegic and, for me, this interaction with people who have the same experiences as I go through is great”, she concludes.

The nursing professor of the Care for Good Extension Project, from Bahiana, Aidê Nunes, highlights the importance of the HTLV Center, which brings together a multidisciplinary team that aims to disseminate care for people with the disease. "This care, this care, is not only developed by reducing the patient to having a virus, this care is provided in a holistic way and with comprehensive support, observing whether this citizen has other difficulties, how he lives and what are his values and cultures”, he concludes.
