III Physical Activity Forum

Share

A Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública held the III Forum on Physical Activity, Health Promotion and Quality of Life. The event took place on September 15, at Campus Cabula, from 08 am to 16 pm, under the coordination of teacher and master Ciro Oliveira Queiroz.

Students and professionals in the field of Physical Education, Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Medicine and Nursing were able to participate in a broad discussion about the inclusion of people, whether disabled, black or transgender, in sports and in the practice of physical activity.

The forum opened with the lecture “Ethical and Moral Principles of Transgender Participation in Sports”, explained by Professor Murilo Santos, who highlighted the role of physical education in gender inclusion and strengthening of relationships within the sports sphere. Then, there were discussions about high performance training in Paralympic sport and ethnic and racial differences in relation to muscle strength and power.

The conference “Performance in Events of Strength and Power in High Performance: a look at ethnic and racial differences” was coordinated by professor and doctor Hélio Campos. Professor Ciro Oliveira, on the other hand, coordinated the conversation “What are the Directions of Sport When Thinking about Gender, Race and Inclusion of People with Disabilities?”

Ciro explains how the event was designed: “we needed to discuss ethical, racial and social inclusion issues, from education, especially in school children's environments, to high performance. That's why we brought in professors who work in these fields of social inclusion”. Thus, the schedule was prepared taking into account very current issues. The professor adds that the proposal was to go beyond the university walls to understand the practice and show students and professionals how they can work on these issues.

Clarcson Plácido, coordinator of the Physical Education course, observes that, with the growth and great discussion that has been taking place around the diversity of gender and race, physical education, as a democratic and versatile area, needs to be attentive to inclusion . “Sport needs to raise questions in relation to attitudinal aspects, that is, we professionals need to learn to deal with these people, respecting the differences”, reports Clarcson when highlighting, like high performance sports, the discussion about participation of transgenders in certain modalities. "Evidence related to these issues and how this has influenced not only high performance, but also the emergence of new talent, or even benefiting the sport aimed at health, came to light in an open and welcoming manner in this forum", describe.

The Physical Education teacher from the public school system, Emanuel Santos, addressed the barriers that people with disabilities face in their daily lives, from the formation of social-affective bonds to school learning, including the routine of physical activity in institutions. He highlights the importance of the event: “a forum of this magnitude within an academic environment is extremely essential. We must maintain the capability. The learning period must take place constantly”. Emanuel believes that the presence of academics, masters, doctors and professionals from different areas brings great diversity to those who work with sport from an inclusive perspective.

Paulo Adriano Schwingel, university professor at UPE – University of Pernambuco, spoke about training for people with disabilities and congratulated the Bahiana for the initiative, noting that the III Physical Activity Forum was extremely relevant, from an academic and social point of view: "From the moment that there is a space for debate on physical education in the different nuances of the person with and with disabilities, going from recreation to sports training, there is a huge significance, in terms of knowledge, for the state of Bahia”.

As for the elucidated theme, Schwingel presented how physical education professionals, physiotherapists, physicians and nutritionists can act in sports activities for people with disabilities, illustrating the mechanical, social and physiological differences of these people. “The great quality of the themes made the forum a unique moment, as it debated ideas from the entire area of physical activity and health in an integrated manner. I believe that the next one should have medical lecturers, psychologists, nurses and nutritionists”, suggests Paulo Adriano.

Luís Antônio Cruz, para-athlete and physical educator, attended the event as a listener and spoke about his affinity with the proposed themes: “Before the accident that left me paralyzed, I was already an athlete. After what happened, I became a Paralympic athlete”. He explains that he worked as a graphic designer while participating in adapted sports. The educator dedicated himself to sports dancing in a wheelchair and, because he likes sports and realizes this difficulty among education professionals regarding adapted sports, he chose to go to college in Physical Education. “I started with a degree and I intend to do a bachelor's degree as soon as I finish the Specialization in Sport and Physical Activity for People with Disabilities, at UFRJ”, he concludes.

Upon learning about the forum, Luís confides that he was very excited, since proposals like this, which take place from the inside out of universities, are essential. “Something I noticed was the limitation of teaching for the inclusion of people with disabilities through Physical Education. The articles practically did not include this theme. Currently, there is a positive difference in this scenario, although it is still below expectations”, assesses the para-athlete, who believes in the role of the university in terms of its more effective participation in this scenario.

UNIME Physical Education student, Agnaldo Pinto, comments on a myth in the area of physical education: “many people believe that it boils down to weight training, soccer and for those with physical fitness, but this is not true. This approach made me understand that people with disabilities have the ability to make certain movements, achieve good results and realize dreams that were temporarily interrupted by an accident, for example." Agnaldo praises the action and adds that he will take the information given to him in his personal and professional life.
